Giles Smith - Master of Light, Dark and Melancholy
Artfull talks to artist Giles Smith about his journey to becoming an artist. From attending Central/St. Martins School of Art in London with John Stezaker, to working extensively in film, to now painting in Muriwai, Smith has lived an colourful life. Inspired by Bosch and Bruegel's carnivals of human folly, Smith produces paintings that examine universal ideas about the human condition: self-identity, relationships, loss. Smith works through feeling: finds himself returning back to the same subjects and vistas, the same darkness.
