Artist

John Pusateri

I’m a practising artist working in painting, printmaking, drawing and photography. I’m a lecturer in the Department of Architecture at Unitec New Zealand and the Director of Auckland Print Studio, a stone lithography printmaking studio focusing on collaborative publication projects.

I have been working with museum specimens in my art practice since 2004 and have had the pleasure of working with numerous curators, ornithologists and entomologists. I have worked with bird mounts and skins from ornithology departments and have done fieldwork alongside entomologists and ecologists. In addition to Auckland Museum, I’ve worked on art projects at the National Museum of Ireland, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and some smaller provincial museums.

My work reflects my interest in the culture of animal preservation, taxidermy, scientific classification, speciation, and extinction. I am motivated by the belief that museum specimens are more than just scientific curiosities and research objects. They are simultaneously remnants of real animals, symbols of a species, an individual with a story imbued in cultural notions and a marker of loss and hope for future survival. Within my work, I aim to draw upon the complex history of animal speciation, conservation and extinction while subtlety examining the irony of living things collected, isolated and ultimately destroyed to be better known, catalogued and preserved.
