Kym Burke is a visual artist and community collaboration and planning facilitator living in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland. Originally from Whanganui-A-Tara, Burke lived overseas before returning to Aotearoa New Zealand to study Anthropology and Human Geography at the University of Auckland.
Her work explores perspective and seeks visual solution to uncover hidden meaning. Deconstructing and reconstructing are a part of her process. Cutting through, painting, sanding, scrubbing, carving into or dismantling the surface plane. She works with a range of media purposefully selecting materials and design elements that offer contrasts and visual disparities — delicate/bold, structured/flexible.
“I’m a strategic thinker and naturally curious about differing viewpoints. In my art practice this is partly about exploring pattern, rhythm, symmetry and balance that potentially bring resolution and reverence.” Burkes grandfather was a cartographer and she says, “it feels like mapping and seeking alternative perspectives is a part of my DNA”.
