While walking on the Routeburn track a strange epiphany occurred that this contemporary Aotearoa was once a wild place. And it was perceived as such by early settlers both Māori, Pākehā, Tauiwi. I use this expression as a positive thing, an exciting and full wilderness ready for adventure. Now we follow tracks looking for that wilderness again.
