Photography

Photography litters our daily lives. We use photographs to mark both the mundane and the memorable. The proliferation of smartphones means that most of us carry a camera with us everywhere we go, stuffed into our pocket or tucked into our bag.

But what is a photograph? The word photography comes from Greek: the term brings together phos meaning light and graphe to denote drawing. Essentially, photography is drawing with light. But more technically, it is a mechanical and chemical process where an image created by light is fixed onto a surface.

Photography's accessibility has often meant it hasn't been taken seriously as an art form but it is this very accessibility that empowers exploration and innovation within photography, tackling contemporary concerns of experience and perspective.
