Mary Spacapan

Big Sur, California - The beginning

2019

Oil on canvas board, custom kahikatea frame

347mm (H) x 270mm (W) x 45mm (D)

Framed

This painting is 2 of 2 remaining pieces from the beginning of my walk into art as full-time mahi back in 2019-2020. I really began to experiment with minimal mark-making to communicate the wairua, spirit, of a place and reflects a fairly monumental and courageous shift towards colourism.

About the Artist

Mary Spacapan

Mary Spacapan’s work is strongly gestural—using colour, composition and rich, buildable texture to explore the animated nature of the whenua.
