Artist Statement

When I was heavily pregnant in the height of summer, the smell of sweet over-ripe fruit made me ill. I found myself looking at that fruit, and my changing body, and seeing similarities between them. Both made of undulating flesh, full with new life wanting to burst forth.

About the Artist

Alice Fennessy

My work is currently intertwined with motherhood as I raise my two young children. I find myself endlessly fascinated by the juxtapositions or dualities thrown up by pregnancy and motherhood, how these experiences can be simultaneously beautiful and ugly, ordinary and other, tender and excruciating. My work explores these spaces through materials and compositions; disparate images from fleeting moments drawn together in stark tones on surfaces such as paper, silk or aluminium. My work aims to be sensitive and vulnerable, casting light on experiences of life often disregarded. I studied a Bachelor of Fine Art with Honours at Massey University CoCA, and also work as a gallery educator and art teacher.
