Artist Statement

David Goggins, ex-Navy Seal, athletic phenomenon and YouTube life coach sensation often refers to an alter ego he created to challenge the frightened boy inside of him that he still sees as David Goggins. The alter ego he names simply “Goggins”. The catchphrase “What would Goggins do?” is now printed on tee-shirts.

During Post Graduate studies, well before ever hearing of the Goggins sensation, I created a similar character to deal with my own insecurities as a person and artist, named Baron Yeti (an anagram for Toby Raine). Like “Goggins” Baron Yeti was the tough-love, rebellious adult version of myself telling me to persevere in making art in whatever fanatical, over the top way best suited. This abstract, grubby painting ‘What would Baron Yeti Do? (Self Portrait as Baron Yeti 1)’ pays tribute to the alter ego we sometimes must embrace in order to proceed with the task at hand.

About the Artist

Toby Raine

Toby Raine is an Auckland-based artist who received a Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland in 2016. He has a distinctive approach to painting, moving large quantities of oil paint across the surface of a canvas with confident strokes. Taking an image or a photograph as a starting point, Raine’s work ends up in a terrain between representation and abstraction.

"There’s no set goal except to make a painting work. I start with an image, and then I work into that... It comes out of a ritual, or a rule. The paint builds up and I work back into it or I wipe it off. There’s a grapple between control and spontaneity. I typically waste a lot of paint, though hopefully I reach a moment where I’ll say, ‘yeah that’s interesting, that surprises me’. I’m not satisfied if I’m not surprised."
