When most of us ask ourselves the question 'what is fine art'? our answer would be painting; and most likely painting. As a fine art medium, painting perhaps has one of the richest histories that cross back and forth not only across geographic boundaries but also across historic time periods and stylistic movements. What is perhaps the most important aspect of painting to consider is that within each period and stylistic movement, it is the technical advances of paint itself, coupled with political and social circumstances that propels and inspires the artist. 

The paintings in this collection are thoroughly contemporary. Yet, they owe their existence, and in some cases their inspiration, to the paintings and practices of significant and influential international and local artists who have come before. The influence of others is perhaps at the core of contemporary painting.
