Artist Statement

Painted in 2020 and exhibited in "If You Close Your Eyes", this work was an introspection of myself on the past year of painting. The materialised objects piled up on one side of the painting are references I used in the past to communicate ideas, and also comment on a particular moment in time. The blank canvas in the back represents the unknown, what is to come next.

About the Artist

Logan Moffat

Since graduating from Elam with BFA Honours in 2018, I have continued to paint, exhibiting in a number of solo and group exhibitions. In 2018 I received the New Zealand Adam Portraiture Award for my painting "Elam". I've continued to explore the portrait since. Expressing primarily in oil paint, my focus on capturing the portrait has evolved over the years. My earlier portraits were direct observations of subjects that I captured in detailed, realistic portraits. My focus now is on capturing the audience's portrait through encouraging introspection and a moment of pause - though amalgamating the elements of figures, environment, size and structure of the painting and canvas.
