An unearthly woman beckons or gestures toward the viewer. Her face is bright and her golden hair glowing against the dark indigo clouds that roil and build behind her.
It is a tumultuous night. Stars appear and are quickly shrouded again by the cloud mass. What message or instruction she conveys is a mystery.
The foreshortened hand is a much loved device in Italian renaissance painting, but the feel of this archetypal female spirit owes much more to something Nordic or Arthurian.
