Artist Statement
In this small study the gestural set of the birds corpse suggests a dance, calling to mind the medieval tradition of the Danse Macabre in which grinning skeletons cavort and circle with people of every age and social station in what was intended to be both terrifying, cautionary, and yet at the same time grimly funny.
About the Artist
Giles Smith
I’m originally from Birmingham in the UK and attended Central/St. Martins School of Art in London. I moved to Aotearoa New Zealand about 25 years ago and have been heavily involved in the film industry for much of that time. I am married with two daughters and live in Muriwai.
