Artist Statement

The modelled head with its illusion of volume is starkly contrasted to the flat plane of gilt in a technique recalling the solemnity and intensity of an icon. However, it does not share the unambiguous intent of the religious image.

As the light changes throughout the day, the metal leaf undergoes marvellous transitions. Flaring brilliantly or glowing with indescribable life in the warm light of the evening sun, a small, miraculous and silent display quite independent of the artists brush.
