Artist Statement

'The sun is out, it is a warm day with little wind. I approach the shed-like house: it is made of slats and there are plenty of holes in it.’ A painting of a dream image. childhood memory. Its namesake is the push and pull of the central rounded form. The traces of line that lay on the surface indicate that the image is not reality.

About the Artist

Sam Walker

I am from Ōtautahi Christchurch and studied my Bachelors and Masters in Painting in Christchurch at the Ilam School of Fine Arts. I moved to the greater Pōneke Wellington area with my partner in late 2020 upon the completion of my Masters degree. I grew up in Christchurch’s greenbelt, just outside of Halswell. A lot of my artistic sentiments are a mix of semi-rural experience and formative years skirting around a broken city centre. Both the landscape and this ‘brokenness’ is translated into literal subjects in my work.
