Artist Statement

‘I see three women — suggestive of my mum, my aunt, and myself as a child — digging holes.’ A diptych of a single dream scene. The two paintings straddle the true dream image.

About the Artist

Sam Walker

I am from Ōtautahi Christchurch and studied my Bachelors and Masters in Painting in Christchurch at the Ilam School of Fine Arts. I moved to the greater Pōneke Wellington area with my partner in late 2020 upon the completion of my Masters degree. I grew up in Christchurch’s greenbelt, just outside of Halswell. A lot of my artistic sentiments are a mix of semi-rural experience and formative years skirting around a broken city centre. Both the landscape and this ‘brokenness’ is translated into literal subjects in my work.
